Michael James Dunn

This series of works is the result of my hīkoi into the Far North of New Zealand. I was eager to see a part of New Zealand blessed with a lack of overpopulation and a profound sense of spirit and space.

For the Maori, it is the departure point from which all the souls pass. It was with this state of mind and intention that I trekked to a place where I knew the creative would awaken and inspire a story.

About the
Exhibition

The impact of setting foot on the whenua was physically felt, a chill that shot through my body and remained as I walked. What greeted me was the sense of power, colour, and beauty, and as I began to take it all in, a calm, clear vision presented itself.

The merging of the mighty Pacific and the powerful Tasman and their eternal flow around and over the land snapped into shape contrast. Water and Rock. Flow and Facet.

I have attempted to capture the fluid and the geometric. These works explore the balance between water, land, and sky and how they can be refined into two distinct surfaces.

About the
Artist

Michael James Dunn

Michael James Dunn is an artist, creative, and designer driven by an enduring curiosity about the stories and emotions that shape people, places, and moments.

His work sits at the intersection of imagination and intention, where visual becomes a language, and every project becomes a narrative.

Whether through composition, texture, colour, or form, Michael approaches creativity as a way of uncovering meaning, transforming ideas into experiences that invite viewers to pause, reflect, and connect.

At the heart of his practice is a belief that art is more than aesthetics; it is storytelling.
